Donde viven los monstruos

Another find today on Youtube.


Where the wild things are in Spanish! So useful as pupils know the story already so don't need to be hung up on meaning of every word.

Just proves something that Mark Reid from BFI showed us last week at the Primary Language Show - the context is key, and in film, it's the interplay between image, sound, dialogue, context and a bit of imagination that makes it!

Waving the flag - official song of FIFA World Cup 2010 - Bandera ondeanado

I loved the official song of the FIFA World Cup 2010 when i heard it for the first time today. And now I've found this bi-lingual version too with K'Naan, the original artist, singing with David Bisbal.

El español David Bisbal y el somalí K´Naan interpretan la versión latina del tema Waving Flag, elegido para la Copa del Mundo FIFA Sudáfrica 2010.
La canción fue estrenada ayer, como parte de las celebraciones rumbo al Mundial.
"La música y el futbol unen al mundo, y a través de esta canción queremos contagiar el sentimiento de alegría que nos provoca este evento mundialista", explicó el artista español, al referirse a la canción inspirada en costumbres africanas referentes a la fiesta, y que aborda temas como el amor, la unión y el optimismo.
El tema presenta pasajes en español e ingles y un video en el que se pueden ver las pocas habilidades futbolistas de Bisbal, quien lucha sin éxito dominar un balón.
La canción de la Copa del Mundo, Waving flag, fue compuesta por el rapero Knaan Mogasishu, quien nació en Somalia aunque es ciudadano canadiense.
La canción es el tercer single de su álbum Troubador y meses atrás fue elegida por la organización del Mundial como su himno oficial.

Veo veo


At the ELL Local Support Group (LSG) last week, we were talking about short activities that needed minimal preparation and could be used for the 'little and often' model.


One of the activities discussed was I spy...

In Spanish there is a lovely little rhyme that goes with the game - check out the East Riding site for sound files, instructions and words. A good game for playing with kids who have a wider vocabulary, but also for discrete groups of words eg food, sports, colours. You could change it to 'tengo tengo' (I have..) and play with items in a bag even.

A lovely Christmas song, written by José Luis Perales and performed here by Los Toribianitos, and today brought to my attention by one of my online friends, Francisco Meza in Perú.

Mis amigos Pooh y Tigger

I've been having a little look at Youtube resources again, and, inspired by the session last week on teaching Infants languages, I've found some sweet little videos featuring Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too! Now, Winnie is always a winner in my books - I just love that bear of very little brain! - but talking Spanish is even better.


A couple of ideas.

This clip is called Estrellita abrillar and is a version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (I know other words). The story seems to be that Lampi, the Heffalump can't sleep and they sing to him. However, his Mummy sings different words so he sings them to the friends then goes to sleep. A cute little story in a song in just over a minute.


The words are:

Then there's this clip called Es la hora de pensar and is a little song to signal thinking time. I think it would be a lovely cue to send children to their desks to work on whatever they are doing, or as a signal to change activity. And not just in language lessons but as one of those 'embedded' ways of making language an everyday, incidental thing.

Teen idols sing in Spanish!

Here's one for your older 'pop' loving pupils. The Jonas Brothers of Disney Channel fame learning a (devilishly tricky it has to be said!) song - and not doing badly!



And here's Vanessa Hudgens from High School Musical singing When there was you and me including a Spanish section in the middle - subtitled.

Some clips to help teach numbers to young learners.

Very sweet - love the graphics. And it's short too.


This looks like the Spanish version of Ten Town!

I like the repetition in this one.

Primary Language workshop - Plantsbrook School


Today I took part in a Primary Language workshop at Plantsbrook School.

My contribution to the day was called You and Youtube and addressed the use of video and slideshows to facilitate and enhance primary language learning. Below is my presentation. You and Youtube - PLS09



Here's my presentation from my Saturday session at the Primary Languages Show in Liverpool entitled You and Youtube.

The idea of the session was to give people ideas about how Youtube can be used in Primary Language Learning (PLL). We looked at alternatives to Youtube, how to use video clips if a site is blocked by downloading via one of a number of tools and of course, ideas of suitable clips to use and how they might be used to meet bjectives in the KS2 Framework.

Activity ideas for use with the clips included:
  • dressing up in clothes/ finding the flashcard as a race during Juguemos en el bosque
  • holding up words - bateau, ciseau, la rivière, l'eau, or jigsaw texts in Bateau Ciseau
  • listen out for a phoneme in Bateau ciseau ('eau') or Shnuffel (ich)
  • respond to a Slideshare using Voicethread
  • rewrite a song eg La Vaca Lola
  • discuss cultural events - Semana Santa, German first day of school
  • look at everyday life in other countries
  • sing a long
  • watching peers and using clips for assessment eg El Carnaval de los animales
  • motivation - eg Baby Mario Mysteries

Los animales hablan español.



This afternoon I had the pleasure of the company of Year 2 for a whole afternoon of Spanish!! So I decided to indulge my creative urges and let them loose with the puppets! This caused great excitement - obviously - perhaps a little more than was strictly necessary, but heigh ho!

The idea was to create short role plays in pairs in Spanish using puppets so that we could safely record them using my camera's video facility, then upload them and the kids would be able to watch them before going home. Best laid plans...

I handed out the puppets by naming them in Spanish and asking ¿Quién quiere el mono? for example - the pupils had to guess the animal to 'win' the right to hold it! That was fine. However, as they put the finger puppets on their fingers, the pupils' excitement was a little more exuberant than foreseen and it took a while to calm down sufficiently to set the task. Of course, the pupils immediately wanted to start talking to one another using the puppets and I didn't want to squash that urge, just channel it ;o)

Next problem was that all previous knowledge seemed to have popped out of their heads and for some reason there were very few who could even remember how to answer ¿Qué tal? let alone ask it! However, after a quick revision session we rehearsed and after break we had a go at recording our animal role play, using Smartboard backgrounds as our backdrops.

Below you can see some of the results - some were better than others and, believe me, given the time and effort it took, I'm pleased we recorded anything!

I was thinking of doing some animation with them.... perhaps leave it until I've recovered :o)

Lingus.tv



Karen aka Spanishblog has, for the second time in a week, pointed me in the direction of an interesting Spanish resource - this time, Lingus.tv.


Based in Barcelona, Lingus.tv uses its own situation comedy '5 y acción' to teach useful phrases through short - and usually rather amusing - episodes featuring Paco, Sandro, Eva, Michael and Agatha. There are three different levels offered - Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced - with titles like ¿Dónde está mi bikini? (where's my bikini?), Mi primer novio (my first boyfriend)and Espiando a Agatha (spying on Agatha).

I've watched several of the episodes, and a key feature seems to be the quirky ending or sting in the tail. See the latest example.




Each clip has subtitles in Spanish.
On the site there is a transcript of the dialogue.
At the click of a button, the dialogue is translated into English.
There are grammar notes pertinent to the episode, with an audio recording of the phrase / expression in question.
The clips are searchable by topic, objective and skill, as well as level.

The site offers advice on how to use the videos and also has a blog - the latest post talks about the benefits of second language acquistion.

I think it's a good way of making a good start at learning some phrases at the same time as being entertained. I particularly like the use of more colloquial (and sometimes colourful!) language that can be missed in some other learning tools. Looking forward to seeing more episodes!! I'll leave you with another episode - this one's for beginners.

El Rap de GUSTA


A Tweet from Spanishblog advised me to check out Profeland, la web para el profesor de español. And, as I'm an obedient girlie, off I popped to see what it was about. I must admit that i haven't had time to look at it in depth and much of it seems to be great for older learners with comprehensions and reviews, but not much for Primary pupils...

EL RAP DE GUSTA

In a similar vein to Conjugations Back and Cry me a verb, Gusta uses rap to teach a grammar point in Spanish, in this case, the verb GUSTAR. It's very catchy and some of the things that you're asked about are quite amusing - tight trousers and big moustaches included!





As the blurb says -

'No parlis sobretot res de la guerra.'


It's been over a week since my last post on Es Repte Català (Catalan Challenge) and although haven't been idle, I haven't done as much as I would've liked to have done.

One way I've found that helps me 'revise' is to listen to the language and to see how much I can understand. I usually find this encouraging as I understand more than I think. It also brings back to my mind phrases that I know and love - for example - com vulguis - as you like!
And if the listening is accompanied by viewing, visual clues add to understanding.
What's more, if the listening / viewing is of something that is already familiar or known to you in some other form, you're on to a winner.

So -

Here's a challenge for you! Courtesy of Lynne Horn (marvellous blogger from Tobermory - the real 'Miss Hoolie') - here's Fawlty Towers in Catalan. Can you follow the story? Which episode is it? Can you pick out any key words?



And what about some Si primer ministre - Sir Humphrey and Bernard show how the results of questionnaires and statistics can be manipulated to say whatever you want! Can you follow the gist? This is trickier as Sir Humphrey is an expert at bamboozling in English so in another language, wel...)




And if all that is too tricky - why not have a go at the tonguetwister challenge on 12seconds.tv? One brave soul has had a go! There'll be another one coming up soon.
